Brief Profiles of Council Members (2025-2027)
Mrs. Mary Asare-Yeboah, FIoD
President, Institute of Directors-Ghana
Mrs. Mary is currently the President of the 11th Governing Council of the Institute of Directors-Ghana (2025 – 2027). She graduated with BSc. (Banking & Finance), MBA (Finance) from University of Ghana; Master of Arts (Ministry) from Trinity Theological Seminary; and Professional Certificate in Psychology and Master of Arts (Guidance and Counselling) from Methodist University Ghana. She is a Fellow and Vice President of the Institute of Directors, a Fellow of Chartered Institute of Bankers, a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner, and a Professional Counsellor.
She later joined HFC (now Republic) Bank where she had a sterling career in banking, heading different departments and establishing new businesses for the Bank. Mary served on the 10th IoD-Gh Council (2023 – 2025) as Vice President. She is a consummate team player serving on several IoD-Gh committees. She brought into the Council her rich experience in administration, financial management, and corporate governance. Following the premature exit of the former CEO, Mary was appointed Chair of IoD-Gh Interim Management Committee which ensured seamless management of the Institute’s Secretariat.
Mary is a consultant in financial management, corporate governance, and a professional counsellor in marriage and family relationships.

Mr. Michael Justice Ashong, FIoD
Vice-President, Institute of Directors-Ghana
Mr. Michael Ashong is currently the Vice President of the 11th Governing Council of Institute of Directors-Ghana. With almost three decades of executive and board-level experience in multi sector corporates across Africa, Michael brings strategic leadership, governance insight and financial acumen to IoD-Gh. As a Fellow and Member of the previous IoD-Gh Council, chairing five key committees including Strategy, Audit, ESG Training and the 25th Anniversary, he directly supported the President and Vice in shaping impactful initiatives over the past 2 years.
His investment banking background equips him with strong problem-solving, communication and stakeholder engagement skills. He has contributed significantly to membership growth, revenue mobilization and visibility of IoD-Gh. Based on the foregoing, he is confident of his readiness to serve as Vice President to advance the mission of IoD-Gh.
Michael commenced his career at UMB, later joined Ecobank where he established and managed Ecobank Development Corporation in several countries, executing transactions across Africa. He earlier led a USAID project that harmonized various laws impacting the securities industry towards enactment of the Ghana Securities Industry Act. As director and former CEO, he recently transformed the 40-year-old Provident Insurance Company to become more efficient, customer-oriented, earned unprecedented revenues and paid superior dividends after a period of non-payment.
He holds Executive MBA and BSc. Degrees from the University of Ghana and professional certificates from The New York Institute of Finance. He previously sat on Boards in several African countries including the Ghana Stock Exchange, Ecobank Development Corporation (Togo), Best Western Premier Accra Airport Hotel (Ghana), EDC Securities Ltd. (Nigeria), Computershare Pan African Holdings (Mauritius) and EDC Investment Corporation (Cote d’Ivoire) among others.
Rev. (Mrs.) Angela Carmen Appiah, FIoD
Immediate Past President (IPP)
Rev. (Mrs.) Angela Carmen Appiah is the Immediate Past President of the Institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Gh). She holds an MSc. in Advanced Practice (Leadership and Management) from the University of Cardiff, Wales, U.K and has close to thirty (30) years of professional practice experiences across a wide field of the health industry including Clinical Care and Management, Academia, Administration and Regulation.
She is a multi-talented Professional with Leadership, Education and Administrative Skills complemented with rich experiences in Board Secretaryship, Corporate Governance, coaching, Conflict Resolution and Management, Counselling, Problem-Solving, and Systems set- up and Restructuring. A Fellow of the Institute of Directors-Ghana, she has served as Chair of three (3) Interim Management Committees (IMC) following nomination by Council to manage transitions.
Prior to her election as President of the Institute, on 11th May, 2023, she served in the capacity of the Vice-President for two (2) years. She also served as the Chair of the Regional Outreach Committee (RoC) of the Institute and was instrumental in the Regional Branch creation exercises.
As Assistant Registrar for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (N&MC) she is the current Head of the Department of the Research and Statistics with work schedules including Data and Information Management, Editorial Board Duties, Policy Development and Review, Programme facilitation and Stakeholder Engagement and Management. She also provides technical support to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) formerly known as the National Accreditation Board (NAB). She is also a Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM).
Mr. Ekow Peterson Afedzie, FIoD
Council Member
Mr. Afedzie is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Gh) and was a Member of the 10th Council of IoD-Gh (2023-2025). He served on two Committees of the Council namely, the Governance, Legal & Ethics Committee and the Risk Committee.
Mr. Afedzie is the former Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange and a former Member of the Council (Board) of the Exchange.
Mr. Afedzie worked with the Ghana Stock Exchange since its establishment in 1990 for over 32 years and has over 20 years board experience with various institutions.. Mr. Afedzie also coordinated the establishment of the Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) and Ghana Alternative Market (GAX).
He was educated at the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, (MBA) in 1989, a Master of Arts degree (MA) in Economic Policy Management in 2010 and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Agriculture in 1985.
He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from Mountcrest University College and a Qualifying Certificate in law from the Ghana School of Law.
He is a member of the Ghana Bar Association, and a full member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG).
Mr. Kofi Okofo Dartey, FIoD
Council Member
Mr. Kofi Okofo Dartey holds MBA (Finance) from University of Ghana, Bachelor of Commerce Degree and Diploma in Education, both from University of Cape Coast.
He is a Fellow of Institute of Directors-Ghana and has served on SME Mentorship and Audit Committees. A Fellow of Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana), a Founding Member of Institute of Internal Auditors (Ghana) and a Member of Institute of Internal Auditors (Florida).
He has over 30 years’ working experience spanning across private and public sectors in management, finance, strategy and auditing. He is currently the Managing Consultant, Okodart Consult, providing management and financial advisory services.
He was a Member of Transitional Management Team established to operationalize Ghana Grid Company Limited. He has and continues to serve on Audit Committees of various public institutions.
Mr. Okofo Dartey received the ‘Gilbert Ohene Dokyi Outstanding Personality Award- 2025’ by the Institute of Internal Auditors (Ghana).
Mr. Sulemanu Koney, FIoD
Council Member
Mr. Sulemanu Koney is a distinguished leader in Ghana and the ECOWAS mining sector, renowned for his transformative leadership. As former CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, he championed sustainable mining, fostering partnerships between multinationals and the government. His strategic policies enhanced the sector’s economic impact, promoting local content, environmental sustainability, and equitable resource distribution.
A seasoned professional, Mr. Koney holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering (KNUST), an MSc in International Business (Maastricht), and a postgraduate diploma in marketing (CIM-UK). He also received an honorary doctorate from UMaT.
His board engagements include University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the ECOWAS Federation of Chambers of Mines. He is Immediate Past Chair of the Global Compact Network Ghana and a Fellow of both IoD-Gh and CIM-UK.
Mr. Koney’s legacy reflects his commitment to ethical, inclusive, and sustainable mining growth.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Gh) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) UK.
Mr. Herbert Lawson, MIoD
Council Member
Mr. Lawson is a business banker with rich experiences in Engineering, Real Estate, Finance, Marketing and Business Advisory.
He holds an Engineering Degree from KNUST, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Marketing from University of Roehampton, UK, an MBA from the University of South Wales, UK and currently pursuing a PhD. in Business Administration at the Dominium University College.
He is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG) and a module reviewer for the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments (CISI), UK.
Herbert works with the Business Development team at Guaranty Trust Bank Ghana PLC after holding previous senior management positions at First Atlantic Bank PLC and SG Bank PLC.
As a member of the 10th IoD Ghana Governing Council, he served on several Council Committees ensuring that the Institute remains a thought leader in director development and corporate governance.
Mr Kofi Asumadu-Apenteng, MIoD
Council Member
Kofi serves as Chief Internal Auditor of the Ministry of Transport and a current Member of the 11th Governing Council ofIoD-Gh. He chairs the Audit Committee (AC) of Ghana Railway Development Authority, serves on the AC of Koforidua Technical University and chairs the Risk Committee of the Registrar of Companies. Past Boards include Fisheries Commission and the Institute of Internal Auditors Ghana. He previously served as a Council member on the 10th Governing Council of IoD-Gh.
Kofi is currently working with others and is leading the process to establish a Corporate Governance Club and a Centre of Excellence at KNUST. The Centre will be utilized to extend Member services beyond Accra. The Clubs will be replicated across the country. He is also leading the IoD-Gh effort to confer a Special Anniversary Award on the Asantehene and to enhance media engagement.

Dr. Rejoice Wodomdedzi Foli, MIoD
Council Member
Dr. Rejoice Wodomdedzi Foli is a UN Global Peace Ambassador and Special Envoy to Ghana for WOLMI-I.C.C, a UN-accredited agency. A Corporate Risk and Governance Consultant, Project Management Advisor, and Licensed Psychologist, she also advocates for ESG/SDG initiatives.
At the Institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Gh), she served as a Council Member on the 10th council (2023–2025), Secretary of the Risk Committee, and member of the Governance, Legal & Ethics Committee. Previously, she served on Regional Outreach Committee, Educational Capacity Development and Research Committee (ECDR) – Secretary, SME Mentorship and was the Project Manager for the development of Ghana’s National Corporate Governance Code in 2022.
Dr. Rejoice W. Foli is a World Humanitarian Award-winning paragon that performs several leadership roles on strategic platforms such as: Board Member – WILDAF (Women In Law and Development
Africa Foundation), Board Member- SCEF (Street Children Empowerment Foundation), Project Director with over 15 years’ experience in UN/ AU /EU sustainable community development initiatives within Health, STEM, TVET and Banking industries.
Passionate about grassroots youth and SME initiatives, she advises on governance, ESG, and SDGs to foster growth and innovation.
Apostle (Dr.) Christopher Kwame Sokpor, MIoD
Council Member
Apostle (Dr.) Christopher Kwame Sokpor holds a PhD in Accounting from Capella University – USA, a Chartered Accountant, Economist with extensive experience in macroeconomics, fiscal policy, monetary policy and Tax Practitioner as well as corporate governance with over 20 years of expertise.
Prior to working as, the Founder/Senior Partner at Deon & Noed International (DNI), where he leads – audit, tax, advisory and HR consulting in multiple countries, he worked with KPMG & World Bank Projects & over 25 Multi-Donor Funded Projects.
His governance experience includes serving on boards such as the Public Interest & Accountability Committee (PIAC), Leverage Counselling Network, College of Counselling & Psychology. He brings ethical leadership, institutional development skills, and a commitment to accountability and transparency.
He is an Apostle of the Gospel and a Licensed Counsellor. He looks forward to advancing the Institute’s goals through active Council engagement and collaborative leadership.
Mr. Robert O. Mensah, MIoD
Council Member
Robert Mensah is a high-performing business leader with 20 years of strategic and commercial leadership experience. He excels in driving organizational change, aligning teams, and delivering superior results.
As General Manager of Eusbett Hotel, he transformed it from a 16-room 2-star facility into a 250-room 4-star hotel with 200 employees, now operating Ghana’s largest conference center.
In 2024, Robert was named CIMG Marketing Practitioner of the Year—the first hotelier and non-Accra-based recipient. He was also recognized as Up and Coming Director of the Year (2019) by the Institute of Directors-Ghana. Under his leadership, Eusbett Hotel has won 15 awards from the Ghana Tourism Authority.
Robert holds an MBA in Finance and is a member of several professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK & Ghana) and the Institute of Directors-Ghana. He serves on multiple boards, including Sunyani Technical University’s Governing Council.
Robert has been a founding Regional Executive Committee Member of the IoD-Gh for the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions from June 2019 to date. From June 2020 to May 2021, Robert served as a member of the Business Development Committee of the IoD-Gh.
He served as a member of the 10th Governing Council of IoD-Gh and as the Chair of the Risk Committee and the Governance, Legal and Ethics Committee of the IoD-Gh.
Mrs. Emma Nancy Mullen-Essien, MIoD
Council Member
Emma is a lawyer with over fifteen (15) years of experience in various legal sectors. Emma has extensive experience managing Boards, providing legal services, and corporate protection. Emma is skilled in legal research, compliance, negotiation, and advocacy.
Emma is the Deputy Head of Legal of the Ghana Export–Import Bank (GEXIM), responsible for providing legal advice and legal support to the Board, Executive Management, and Departments on matters affecting the Bank’s functioning.
Prior to being the Deputy Head of Legal, Emma served as the Company Secretary of the Bank and was responsible for maintaining a Secretariat for the Board, providing guidance and support to the Board on matters of good governance and changes in legislation.
Emma also worked in the erstwhile Export Trade, Agricultural and Industrial Development Fund (EDAIF), which later transitioned into GEXIM as the Senior Legal Officer/Manager of the Board Secretariat.
While with the erstwhile EDAIF, Emma was responsible for drafting, reviewing, conducting legal due diligence on the implementation of all contracts, and ensuring that the highest standards of corporate governance were both promoted and maintained.
Emma also worked with AB & David Law Firm, Ridge, Accra, as an Attorney. She assisted in handling commercial, labour, and family law cases. She provided research support for International Arbitration.
Emma holds a Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) from the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, Professional Certificate for Law Practice in Ghana from the Ghana School of Law, an Executive Master’s in Business Administration (EMBA) from the University of Ghana Business School, Bachelor of Law (LLB) and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Ghana.
Emma is a product of Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast, a member of the Ghana Bar Association, a member of the International Bar Association, and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK.
Dr. Alfred Mahamadu Braimah, FIoD
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Alfred Mahamadu Braimah joined the Institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Gh) on the 15th of April, 2024, as Chief Executive Officer.
He joined the Institute having worked with Unilever in Ghana, India, United Kingdom, South Africa and Nigeria for about twenty (20) years. He held key positions in senior management, Director, and general management levels.
Dr. Braimah also worked with the Economic Community of West African Stares (ECOWAS) in Abuja, as Director of Private Sector, and by internal transfer, as Director of Finance, and later, based on the nomination by the government of Ghana, as the Auditor General, ECOWAS Institutions. As Auditor General, he was one of the six (6) Heads of Institution of the ECOWAS Community Institutions and a member of the Management Committee.
Dr. Alfred Braimah is currently an Independent non-executive Director and Chairman of the Board of Benso Oil Palm Plantations Plc (A subsidiary of the Wilmar Group), Trainer and Facilitator of the ECOWAS Institutions on Risk Management and Control, Partner, Audit and Assurance at ABI & Partners firm of Chartered Accountants and a Part-time Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School and the Laweh University College.
Alfred is happily married with 5 children.
With his wealth of experience, there is no doubt that jointly with the Governing Council and staff the Institute will move to the next level.
