Council briefs the Rt. Hon. Speaker on the Institute’s work and seeks his guidance on its Charter Bill
The 11th Governing Council of the Institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Gh) on Tuesday, 20th October 2026, paid a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at Parliament House in Accra. The visit formed part of the Council’s engagements with key national institutions in support of good corporate governance in Ghana.

The delegation was led by the President of the Institute and Chair of the Governing Council, Mrs. Mary Asare-Yeboah, FIoD. It included members of the Governing Council, Fellows of the Institute and staff of the Secretariat.
Mrs. Asare-Yeboah thanked the Speaker for receiving the Council and for the support he has shown the Institute in the past. “Your doors are open, and we do not take that for granted at all,” she said.
The President briefed the Speaker on the Institute’s work in championing director professionalism through training, research and advocacy, including its publication of the National Corporate Governance Code (2022) and the Director’s Handbook. She also updated him on the Institute’s pursuit of a Charter by Act of Parliament, which would give IoD-Gh the legal mandate to set and enforce professional standards for directors, certify them locally, and promote ethical and accountable board leadership in both the public and private sectors.
The President explained that the Charter is driven by the need to strengthen corporate governance and leadership accountability in Ghana. She pointed to the lessons of the 2017-2018 banking sector collapse and the gaps in organisational resilience exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Council sought the Speaker’s guidance on the way forward for the Bill and offered the Institute’s support for Parliament’s governance agenda through director-education programmes for Members and staff.
The Speaker welcomed the Council and commended the Institute’s work and publications. He stressed the importance of good governance to national development and advised the Council on the legislative process. He encouraged the Institute to work with Government to bring the Bill before the House. “Be assured that we are here for you,” he told the delegation.

The Speaker was joined by senior officials of the Parliamentary Service, including the Deputy Clerk in charge of Legislative Management Services.
