The Institute of Directors-Ghana (IoD-Gh) represented by the President/ Chair of the Governing Council Rev. (Mrs.) Angela Carmen Appiah, FIoD and Mr. Seyram Kodzo Mankra, MIoD, on Thursday, February 15, 2024 met with the Programme Manager of Youth Leadership (YoLe) Fellowship Programme of the UNFPA, Mr. Michael Ige and members of the fifth (5th) Cohort of the Programme at the Orange Loft within the UNFPA Offices in Accra.

Mr. Michael Ige, conducted the IoD-Gh team around the Orange Loft where the YoLe Fellowship Cohort is housed during the one-year training programme.

The President of the Institute, Rev. (Mrs.) Angela Carmen Appiah in her address to the Fellows of the Cohort touched on some key factors and principles that will help young people in their daily lives both in private and the corporate environment.

She shared insights on relationship building, Emotional Intelligence, adaptability and flexibility in the modern business operations.

She also emphasized on the importance of ethical leadership qualities, including accountability, transparency and truthfulness. “Leadership is about self and situation awareness, valuing oneself and functioning wisely, not relying on IQ alone.”

She made mention of the place of Mentorship and personal leadership development.

She also emphasized the importance of building critical thinking skills in ensuring quality in decision-making in leadership roles.

Taking his turn , Mr. Seyram Kodzo Mankra spoke about leadership and mentorship in our jurisdiction and urged the young people to work together to make Ghana and Africa better. He further invited the Fellows to join the Institute of Directors-Ghana, with a view to leverage the rich benefits, including mentorship opportunities and access to the rich resources, including publications and leadership programmes to enhance their course.

He also highlighted on the importance of corporate governance and the need to adopt best practices and ethical guidelines in business decision-making. He used the opportunity to introduce the most current publication of the Institute; the National Corporate Governance Code, (NCGC) which he explained is a document developed by the Institute in collaboration with other Partners and stakeholders as a guide for organizations and individuals on how to conduct their businesses ethically. He also introduced the Directors’ Handbook; Best Practice Guide and the Chief Executive Officer, both publications of the Institute.

The President of IoD-Gh further charged the Fellows to be mindful of their mandate to become Crusaders of ethical leadership in their spheres of influence, by consciously wearing the right governance ‘ATTIRE’; Accountability, Truthfulness, Transparency, Integrity, Responsibility and Excellence.

During a very interactive Session, Career Development and Leadership experiences were discussed.

Mr. Mankra emphasized the importance of having the right attitude in addition to knowledge and experience, stating that a negative attitude can prevent someone from advancing in their chosen paths in life.

Rev. (Mrs.) Angela Carmen Appiah shared her experiences as a wife, mother and a career woman while also taking on leadership roles. She further emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy mindset even in spousal relationships. She also spoke about balancing work and spirituality, dealing with conflicts , difficult people, spiritual growth, leadership, and healthy communication with God.
